The Nash Hotel in Berkeley receives mixed reviews, primarily due to concerns about cleanliness, outdated facilities, and inconsistent customer service. While some guests appreciate its low price and convenient location, numerous reports detail problems ranging from unsanitary conditions and billing issues to aggressive overcharging and a lack of basic amenities. The hotel's aging infrastructure and reactive management appear to be significant drawbacks.
First off, once you want a king bed and a private bathroom you are looking at $189/night. This is on par with a king bedroom in much nicer hotels within 4 blocks for whom a bathroom is standard and not a high priced option. For this, the bed and bedding are clean and comfortable. However the bathroom is a deal breaker. No window, fan or outlets. The toilet has been modified to barely use enough water to flush a piece of toilet paper. The shower handle has been modified so that the hottest water you can get in the shower is tepid. Overall, this older hotel could respond to some TLC but the current owners cannot even be bothered to replace lighting fixtures leaving your room with a bare bulb on the ceiling.
Great location at a very low price. I reached out to the hotel after my stay for assistance with the receipt, and they quickly provided help. Would stay again.
Great location, although in a shady area. Service was pretty bad, poor communication and did not have straightforward billing. Rooms were fine for a 2 star but really only good for people who want to spend as little time as possible in the hotel. Price was very good compared to other hotels in the area
THEY TRIED TO GET MORE MONEY FROM YOU. I arrived at 11pm. I rang the bell and waited for 15 minutes until I had to go to trip.com to call them from there. Otherwise, I might have had to wait for more. Its their fault and I was OK with that. However, when I checked out, the owner said that he could keep my luggage at the reception til 5pm only. Later than that they charge me 10 usd per bag. I arrived back at the hotel at 5:10 pm and waited at the door again. He said: "you are late. Give me the tips. Its supposed to be 30 usd". I would be happy to tip, but it was feeling like some kinda scam. I was late for 10 min and they asked me for money. But on the first day they were late, I didnt ask for anything. The location is good. Very convenient to get around. However, I now understand why the front door is always closed. Its because in front of the hotel, there are trash cans. I see flies a lot in front of the front door. I don't complain because probably the hotel itself cannot do anything about the trash cans being in front of their doors always. But I think because of this advantage, they should make up for customers by being more reasonable and generous.
DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! This place is DIRTY, cluttered, and just downright scammy. If you want to see mice, hear other rooms walking, talking, and having sex, have a dirty bathtub and shower curtain, this might be the place for you! They were going to process a refund and “accidentally” charged us for one night while processing the refund and now won’t return the “accidental” charge for being there from 9-11:30. HORRIBLE HOTEL. We were going to sleep in the rental instead until we found another hotel. This place is HORRENDOUS.
This place is the worst don't ever come here. After five minutes of reserving my room, I arrived at the hotel opened the door with my things then walked back out. Proceeded to tell the manager that I wanted a refund because they offered no a c and no internal bathroom and also their t.V barely worked with all foreign channels. He told me I had to call booking dot com, which I did. They said they needed the manager's approval for the refund which he denied. Ultimately, I was held hostage in a room I didn't want that was hot and dingy, and I got barely any sleep, because he forced me to stay in a room that I didn't want to pay for. All of this because he didn't want to give me a refund after five minutes of booking the room. The manager in this hotel absolutely sucks! Avoid at all costs!
Would not recommend. At the entrance, I was greeted by a ton of flies, and reception was on a separate floor. I didn't have internet in my bedroom for more than 3 hours. There wasn't soap, nor toilet paper in the bathroom or any toiletries, and when I left, there wasn't anyone around for checkout.
Overall good experience. The rooms are neat and clean. For the price, it’s a great. It’s obviously not going to be a luxury hotel, but if that’s something you want, you’re not going to get it for this price…Some rooms have shared bathrooms (if you choose this), but I didn’t mind since I’m used to living in a dorm. The family who owns the hotel is super sweet, and she helped me out with a lot and was super kind. It’s also near a lot of cool places to visit in Berkeley. I’ll definitely go back if I ever need a place to stay in Berkeley.
My recent stay at the Nash Hotel in Berkeley was nothing short of wonderful, thanks in large part to Yvonne at the front desk. As an Australian visiting the US, I was a bit confused by the currency conversion and quite jet-lagged, but Yvonne's incredible kindness and patience made all the difference. She ensured we had a smooth check-in and provided a beautifully furnished room that perfectly matched the hotel's charming vintage and dark academia style, with rich dark wood accents that spoke to the hotel's 100-year-old history. My partner and I were in town for a science conference, and the Nash Hotel's proximity to the university made our stay incredibly convenient. The location is fantastic, with a delightful mix of local attractions including an excellent vegan pizza shop nearby, convenient fast food just around the corner, and an abundance of adorable squirrels adding to the charm. Overall, staying at the Nash Hotel was a fantastic experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Berkeley. The combination of excellent service, beautiful accommodations, and a prime location made our trip memorable and enjoyable.
I don't understand why there are so many bad reviews on this hotel. the room was clean and comfortable. the facility is a little old and shared in the bathroom, but the price is explained it. The owner is super kind. she even delivered my super heavy luggage to the room. I have really good experience while staying
