Hotel Shattuck Plaza is a historic hotel in downtown Berkeley known for its Victorian-inspired design and central location near BART and UC Berkeley. Recent reviews highlight the hotel's aesthetic appeal and friendly staff, but also raise concerns about room cleanliness and accessibility issues.
I absolutely loved this hotel. Every detail was beautiful and thoughtfully designed. The atmosphere felt as if I had stepped into the Victorian era, full of elegance, luxury, and charm. I truly adore this style of design, and it made my stay very special. It felt as though a lady with exceptional taste had personally overseen every detail of this place. The furniture selection was incredibly refined and sophisticated, and I found myself taking countless photos because everything was so stunning. I would like to thank the owners for their wonderful sense of style and attention to detail. When I traveled to another state, I actually looked for the same hotel, but unfortunately I couldn’t find one. I sincerely wish this hotel had locations in every state because it is truly a unique and memorable experience. Highly recommended, and I look forward to staying here again in the future. ?????
Quality service, rooms are really comfy. Food is great. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Good location being next to a BART station. Will definitely stay here again if I come back to the Bay Area!
Our recent stay at this hotel was extremely disappointing and fell far below expectations. The biggest issue began before we even arrived. The street to the hotel entrance was closed, yet there were no signs directing hotel guests to valet or alternate access. Navigating the area was incredibly frustrating due to multiple “no left turn” and “no right turn” restrictions, making it unnecessarily difficult to reach the property. This situation was clearly foreseeable, and the hotel could have easily sent guests an email with clear arrival instructions and valet directions — but they did not. Upon arrival, there was also no assistance with luggage or guest arrival support. Unfortunately, the room experience was just as disappointing. When we entered, the room was extremely hot. We turned on the air conditioning, lowered it as much as possible, dropped our bags, and left hoping it would cool down. However, the thermostat would not go below 67 degrees, which was nowhere near sufficient. The air felt stagnant, and the room remained warm and uncomfortable throughout the night. By morning, once the sun came up, the heat became unbearable. What was perhaps most frustrating was the complete lack of concern when we mentioned these issues at checkout. Rather than acknowledging the experience or expressing any effort to address it, we were simply told, “Have a nice day.” This stay was frustrating, uncomfortable, and far below the level of service and communication we expected.
Important things to know: this hotel is dog friendly and may have the best customer service ever. Housed in a beautiful building with gorgeous architecture, Hotel Shattuck perfectly blends historic charm with comfort. Some people think “historic” means old and rundown—absolutely not. Here, it means clean, beautiful, and full of original character. The restaurant, Zino, is fresh and delicious, with excellent service from Carly—thank you, Carly! The hotel staff truly goes above and beyond. We used valet parking, and although I’m sorry I forgot your name, you were absolutely the best. The area offers plenty of dining options, and there’s a Target just across the way should you forget a sweater or toothbrush. The BART station is also conveniently nearby. Berkeley has personality, so the streets can be lively, but I have never felt unsafe. The people and location are truly great. Highly recommend Hotel Shattuck!
Hi all! My BFF lives in Berkeley and I finally decided to stay at "the Shattuck" as he calls it.. The place is great! The food at the hotel is really good! I had bar food from the bar one night and breakfast from the restaurant the next morning. I was lucky enough to have Al waiting on our table, which never lacked a refill of tea. I stayed in room 511 - omg!!! See the pictures of the Golden Gate and Mt Tame in my review. The room was well appointed and very quite. Huge bathroom and the hugest closet (with a safe!) I have ever seen in a hotel room. The staff treated were friendly and helpful - and yet nicely chill. It's just nice to feel a little of that famous chill for a minute. Definitely a MUST STAY!!
Great location, just across the street from a parking garage, and easy walking distance to shops, great restaurants, and the UC campus. Service was welcoming and the hotel checked both by text and calling the room to see if all was well. The room was missing a luggage rack, and they sent one up quickly. The bed was comfortable, the A/C and heater worked, and there was a minifridge (not a minibar) in the room. It's nice to see an historic hotel thriving downtown.
Worst day ever. Arrived at 2 AM after the bathrooms for men were out at SFO. 10 AM meeting today. Ugh. I walked in dejected and frustrated. Allen greeted me, asked me how my day was, asked me what he could do. WOW! That floored me. The definition of hospitality. If you ever get a chance to stay at this hotel do it. Ask for Allen. Made an awful day bearable. Thank you Allen.
Charming historic hotel from the 1910's... But not really a good experience for us... This hotel was mainly booked because it's close to UC Berkeley. Our room hasn't been made up for 3 days in a row. The heater wasn't working, we had to change room after 3 freezing nights. The only compensation we've had is a 20$ breakfast voucher... Nice personnel at lobby though, but lack of efficiency...
Great service. Good location. The hotel is charming and historical. The rooms are therefore small and "strange", far from the usual rectangular shape of chain hotels. The bed is on the smaller side as is the bath.
Location is really great right next to BART and a Target. Kind and helpful staff. Unfortunately it only goes south from here -- Poorly designed spaces in rooms. Noisy dirty sound permitting windows, clogged shower drain, airborne lint as well as layered on furniture, stained old seemingly never cleaned fabric furniture. Over the week stay, my wife and I got sneezy and snotty. We got better as soon as we left. After changing clothing, sitting anywhere in the room got our clothes linty. Like in other reviews, carpets need replacing but this is minutiae compared to other things. They clean with vacuums all the time it seems, but that's not good enough. It's clear they don't properly clean the fabrics in the facility with proper wet tools and detergeants, if you asked me I'd guess they never did that, or at least for years. Wish I could have given a positive review here, especially since the staff were so nice. There's so much immaterialized potential to this place, if it was not so offensively dirty we would have come back on our next visit despite the other failures. I can see their comments to other reviews from years ago, talking about correcting these issues -- They haven't. The facility is still mostly in a neglected state. Saying they'll do something about it, and then not, impedes the credibility of their brand. So can't recommend, even if they pinky promise next time will be better.
