Hotel Shattuck Plaza is a historic hotel in downtown Berkeley, offering a convenient location near UC Berkeley and BART. While praised for its location, staff friendliness, and charming atmosphere, it frequently faces concerns regarding cleanliness, room quality, and inconsistent service, particularly concerning billing issues.
Great location, just across the street from a parking garage, and easy walking distance to shops, great restaurants, and the UC campus. Service was welcoming and the hotel checked both by text and calling the room to see if all was well. The room was missing a luggage rack, and they sent one up quickly. The bed was comfortable, the A/C and heater worked, and there was a minifridge (not a minibar) in the room. It's nice to see an historic hotel thriving downtown.
Worst day ever. Arrived at 2 AM after the bathrooms for men were out at SFO. 10 AM meeting today. Ugh. I walked in dejected and frustrated. Allen greeted me, asked me how my day was, asked me what he could do. WOW! That floored me. The definition of hospitality. If you ever get a chance to stay at this hotel do it. Ask for Allen. Made an awful day bearable. Thank you Allen.
Charming historic hotel from the 1910's... But not really a good experience for us... This hotel was mainly booked because it's close to UC Berkeley. Our room hasn't been made up for 3 days in a row. The heater wasn't working, we had to change room after 3 freezing nights. The only compensation we've had is a 20$ breakfast voucher... Nice personnel at lobby though, but lack of efficiency...
Great service. Good location. The hotel is charming and historical. The rooms are therefore small and "strange", far from the usual rectangular shape of chain hotels. The bed is on the smaller side as is the bath.
Location is really great right next to BART and a Target. Kind and helpful staff. Unfortunately it only goes south from here -- Poorly designed spaces in rooms. Noisy dirty sound permitting windows, clogged shower drain, airborne lint as well as layered on furniture, stained old seemingly never cleaned fabric furniture. Over the week stay, my wife and I got sneezy and snotty. We got better as soon as we left. After changing clothing, sitting anywhere in the room got our clothes linty. Like in other reviews, carpets need replacing but this is minutiae compared to other things. They clean with vacuums all the time it seems, but that's not good enough. It's clear they don't properly clean the fabrics in the facility with proper wet tools and detergeants, if you asked me I'd guess they never did that, or at least for years. Wish I could have given a positive review here, especially since the staff were so nice. There's so much immaterialized potential to this place, if it was not so offensively dirty we would have come back on our next visit despite the other failures. I can see their comments to other reviews from years ago, talking about correcting these issues -- They haven't. The facility is still mostly in a neglected state. Saying they'll do something about it, and then not, impedes the credibility of their brand. So can't recommend, even if they pinky promise next time will be better.
I had a horrific experience with Hotel Shattuck Plaza. I requested a cancellation through Booking.com, and the hotel initially confirmed over the phone that they would refund me. They later retracted this, claiming it was "too late." When I arrived at the front desk to resolve this or simply check in, they refused to give me the room because they had already marked me as a "no-show." Consequently, they kept my money and denied me entry. The receptionist, Janea, was unhelpful and dismissive. She handed me a business card, claimed the manager was on vacation, and said absolutely no one else could help for two days. I was left stranded with no refund and no place to stay. Avoid this hotel—their management and communication are atrocious. Few observations : 1. Only street parking or expensive valet parking. 2. Hotel looks outdated
Great experience at Hotel Shattuck Plaza. Stayed here with friends and family for my wedding. The staff was incredible. The rooms were clean and spacious. Great location in downtown. Highly recommend.
Beautifully appointed historic hotel in the heart of downtown Berkeley - only stayed 1 night. The staff was attentive and very friendly. Room was smallish - think European sized, but had everything we needed. Spotless bathroom, great show/tub combo and with very comfortable bed. There is street noise but on a Sunday night it was nothing disturbing. Only issue was bathroom door was a sliding door that could easily get off its track, but not a huge deal. Would definitely stay here again in the future!
In the beginning I wasn’t too happy about the room I got as a few things weren’t functioning as they should. Anna at the reception was really kind and got me into another really wonderful room where I enjoyed my stay to the fullest. She was overall very kind and helpful when needed. The location of the hotel is great. Especially when you need to arrive with bigger luggage from the airport, you’re right next to the bart station.
Love this place! Will have to stay here again next time I’m in SF! Such easy access to the metro and convenient shopping across the street. Restaurants near by are out of this world!
