The Berkeley City Club is a stunning, historic hotel offering a unique and elegant experience in the heart of Berkeley. Guests consistently praise its beautiful architecture, charming atmosphere, and attentive, friendly staff, particularly highlighting its community-focused environment and suitability for special events. While some have noted minor inconveniences with amenities and parking, the overwhelming sentiment is one of delight.
My wife and I love staying at the Berkeley City Club! Great location makes it easy to walk the streets of Berkeley for great food and entertainment. Spencer at the front desk is very knowledgeable about the area and super friendly if you need anything extra for your room. I honestly can't see myself staying anywhere else in the East Bay.
My new go-to place to stay in Berkeley. Such a lovely stay!! A historical space with beautiful architecture, I felt the difference as soon as I walked in. There are so many thoughtful touches and details that you don't get in your typical hotel. And the place buzzes nicely with members coming in for exercise and socialization. My room was cozy and comfortable. The staff are also so helpful and welcoming. Spencer was attentive and friendly. He really made a difference. There are daily activities, like a restorative Chair Yoga on Mondays that I took. This place doesn't have a couple amenities (like a TV or microwave in bedroom), but instead you can go downstairs to use the microwave. Worth the trade-off to have the community feel.
I had my wedding at Berkeley city club and it was absolutely amazing! First off, so cool to have it at a one-of-a-kind historic venue designed by Julia Morgan! Also, it is right across UC Berkeley campus which - go bears! - which my husband and I both attended, so that made it extra sweet :). It was also big enough for all my guests - it was about 200 people! The events coordinator Brianne went above and beyond to help me plan out my special day, especially since I did not use a planner, and her support really did reassure me that I did in fact, make the right choice in selecting BCC as my reception venue. The venue is gorgeous, elegant and yet unique, especially in December when it's so thoughtfully decorated with Christmas trees and lights, and the little gardens and architectural features are absolutely amazing for all sorts of photos. The staff set up everything sooo beautifully as well. My guests loved the food (so good!!), the vibes...the space is amazing because you get the whole second floor so it makes it so that your guests aren't crammed in one area but kids can hang out at one place, people can eat, chat and mingle ...plus the hotel staff are so sweet and left such a thoughtful gift the night of our wedding for us! Cannot recommend enough - brides, if you're looking for a wedding venue, you need to inquire with BCC!
I had the absolute pleasure of photographing a wedding at the Berkeley City Club and staying onsite, and I cannot say enough good things about this place. The entire property is breathtaking. Every corner feels intentional, elegant, and full of character. As a photographer, it is truly a dream location. There is not a single bad backdrop anywhere on the grounds, from the courtyard and arches to the indoor spaces and pool. It is endlessly photogenic. Beyond the beauty, the experience itself was exceptional. The staff was warm, welcoming, and incredibly accommodating throughout the wedding day and my stay. Everything felt seamless and thoughtfully cared for, which made it such a calm and enjoyable place to work and to be. The Berkeley City Club is one of those rare venues that feels both historic and intimate, grand and cozy at the same time. It created such a beautiful experience for the couple and their guests, and as a vendor, it was a joy to be part of a day in such a well run, stunning space. I would recommend it without hesitation to couples, guests, and fellow vendors alike.
We can’t thank the Berkeley City Club team enough for making our wedding absolutely unforgettable. Our guests were completely dazzled by the venue, and everyone had an incredible time. The food was phenomenal — which, in our experience, is rare for wedding food! Throughout the entire planning process, the team (especially Brianne, our venue coordinator) was incredibly responsive, attentive, and detail-oriented. We were so impressed by how seamlessly Brianne stepped in after our first coordinator’s departure and how quickly she ensured everything ran flawlessly. A heartfelt thank-you to Brianne and the entire Berkeley City Club staff for going above and beyond to make our day so special. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
(Review for catering/events/venue service) I don’t have enough great words for Nicole and her team at Berkeley City Club. I planned my wedding entirely “remotely” from out of state and Nicole was always ready to answer my millions of questions and make sure everything was being planned to perfection. I had actually never seen the hotel in person, and I must say the architecture, foliage, vibes, etc are better and MORE stunning in person than in photos. Truly a breathtaking venue that transports you with its historic arches, details, etc. Wedding food is often lackluster in my experience, but I was thoroughly impressed by all of the plated dinner dishes we were served. My salmon was perfectly cooked and guests complimented their meals as well. They were also able to accommodate all gluten free food as I have celiac disease, which was the cherry on top. Additionally, a special shout out to the staff who worked the event day-of. Everyone was kind with bright smiles, and treated me and everything/everyone else with care.
Classy place. The architecture is beautiful and there’s a lot going on like bridge! Centrally located in Berkeley right near campus. I stayed for a friends wedding and we had a lovely time. Staff was all very friendly and accommodating.
For those who like the iconic Queen Anne Hotel in SF, well Berkeley has its own in the Berkeley City Club. Opened in 1930, the club has 35 rooms on three floors but also is a fully functioning club. The ambience and service were excellent and the bar area lively in the evening. No business center but plenty of areas to work or relax and read. Great location. Highly recommended. The extensive pictures below speak for themselves..
I think the Berkeley City Club is a charming hotel—authentically vintage in good way. My colleague and I stayed there for a full week during a conference at the nearby university. There’s a distinct scent of an old building, which I personally liked—it adds to the atmosphere. Everything feels authentic and is well run by a committed and thoughtful staff (some of whom seem to have been there for many years). The building itself is truly an architectural wonder. We stayed in a large suite that felt like “my grandma’s house,” again in the good sense: cozy, quiet, with very comfortable beds, wonderful views, and a surprisingly high-quality shower room. I highly recommend booking one of the upgraded suites—they don’t cost much more and truly feel like an apartment you’re living in while staying in the city. The breakfast is quite good. There’s no cooked-to-order egg selection, but they offer two kinds of quiche and boiled eggs, along with excellent pastries and the usual elements of a continental breakfast. The quiche—though excellent—can start to feel repetitive after a few days. The hotel is located right next to the university, and it was easy to go down into town for dinners. There’s no coffee machine in the room, but I really appreciated the extensive tea and coffee station on the first floor, open 24/7 free of charge. It was a pleasure to sit in the architecturally striking hallways on one of the vintage sofas, drinking coffee with my colleague and reflecting on the ideas we absorbed during the conference. All in all, I think this is an excellent hotel. If true vintage character is your taste, you’ll almost certainly enjoy it as much as I did.
I recently had the opportunity to work as a hairstylist and officiant for a wedding at the Berkeley City Club, and it truly exceeded all expectations! The venue is stunningly beautiful, showcasing the exquisite Julia Morgan architecture that adds a timeless elegance to any event. Everything was impeccably clean, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The staff were incredibly attentive, making the entire experience enjoyable for everyone involved. The only minor drawback was the parking situation due to its inner-city location, but the charm and beauty of the venue more than made up for it. I highly recommend the Berkeley City Club for anyone looking for a breathtaking wedding venue!
